Zone melting ( zone recrystallization ) - a method of treatment of solids , based on the different solubility of the impurities in the solid and liquid phases. The method is a kind of directional solidification , which is characterized by the fact that at each time point is molten some small portion of the sample. This molten zone moves through the sample, which leads to a redistribution of the impurity. If the impurity is more soluble in the liquid phase, it gradually accumulates in the molten zone, moving together with it. As a result, impurity accumulates in a portion of the original sample. Compared with the directional solidification method is more effective. The method was proposed by George. Pfann in 1952 and has since gained a lot of popularity. The method currently used to purify more than 1500 compounds.
