Channel  ( German Schweller , English channel  or [ - shaped cross - section ) is a standard profile of structural elements made of black rolled steel , which has a U - shaped cross - section. It is used as a supporting structure in construction  and mechanical engineering . Stainless steel channels are also produced, which are resistant to corrosion , therefore, they are more durable than hot - rolled channels with comparable stiffness and strength of the resulting structures.
