In the cosmetic industry stearic acid is used as the structure-forming and emulsifying component in creams.
Stearic acid is used in analytical chemistry at turbidimetric definition of calcium, magnesium and lithium, and also as liquid phase in distribution gas liquid chromatography for unmixing of fatty acids. When polishing metals stearic acid is component of polishing pastes.
This connection is applied not only as functional chemical, but also as chemical raw materials. For example, for receiving octadecyl (stearyl) alcohol which is used as strukturoobrazovatel and emolent in creams and the defoaming agent in detergents. In the industry stearic acid is used also for octadecylamine synthesis.
From stearates apply sodium stearate as anion surfactant, as detergent and component of cosmetic products, thickener of greasings, the stabilizer at formation of polyamides and anti-expanding agent in the food industry, and also calcium stearate - as thickener of greasings, the stabilizer of polyvinylchloride and external lubricant at formation of products from it, auxiliary sikkativ and the delustring substance in paints and varnishes, gidrofobizator to cement and fabrics, the additive interfering caking of flour, emulsifier for cosmetics. Besides, in production of oil varnishes magnesium stearate is used. Zinc stearate is applied in medicine, production of rubber, plastic and by oilcloths. Stearate of copper is used for bronzing of gypsum and as the agent interfering overgrowing. Lead stearate is applied as sikkativ. Water soluble salts of stearic acid, in particular, sodium stearates, potassium and ammonia, are soaps. Stearates apply as components of the gluing pastes, antioxidants, emulsions to processing of textiles and skin, stabilizers of foodstuff. Esters of stearic acid are provided ethyl - and the butyl stearates applied as plasticizers and glycolstearate which is used as substitute of natural wax.
