Potassium saltpeter (potassium nitrate) - anhydrous crystal salt of white color (is more rare with a yellowish shade).

- Solubility of potassium saltpeter in 100 grams of water:
- o at 20 °C - 31,5 g,
- o at 40 °C - 63,9 g,
- o at 60 °C - 109,9 g,
- o at 114 °C - 312 g.
In solutions of nitric acid solubility of nitrate of potassium at first goes down with increase in its concentration, and then increases. The minimum solubility is observed at 50 °C and is equal to 24,91% at the content in solution of 27,63% of nitric acid and 47,46% of water.
Two crystal modifications of potassium saltpeter are known. At low temperatures crystals of a rhombic form are formed, at high - romboendrichesky. [5]
Potassium saltpeter as fertilizer belongs to the complex two-member fertilizers containing potassium and nitrogen .
Content of nutrients depending on brand of fertilizer makes not less than 99,85% on nitrate potassium.
Mass fraction of water - no more than 0,1%. [5]
Impurity (ballast) are practically absent. Hygroscopicity is low. [5]

Application
Agriculture
Saltpeter potassium (potassium nitrate) is applied as fertilizer to various crops. [2]
The brands of an ammofoska registered and allowed to use in the territory of Russia as fertilizer are in the table on the right. [3]
Industry
Saltpeter potassium is applied in the glass industry to optical glassmaking, production of mixes for decolouration and clarification of crystal glasses, for increase of durability of products from glass, decolouration and clarification of technical glass.
Saltpeter potassium finds application in the electrovacuum industry, in production of smoky gunpowder, at production of enamels, thermosalts, heat carriers.
In the food industry nitrate of potassium is used as preservative. [1]
Behavior in the soil
Transformation of potassium saltpeter in the soil is caused by interaction with soil solution and the soil absorbing complex of ions of potassium and nitric acid as a part of substance. When entering into the soil fertilizer is quickly dissolved in soil solution.
Cations of potassium enter interaction with PPK, as well as ions of mononuclear potash fertilizers, on two types of absorption: exchange (physical and chemical) and not exchange (fixings).
Anion of nitric acid provides to fertilizer of property of nitrate forms of nitrogen fertilizers. Nitrate forms, as well as at mononuclear nitrogen fertilizers, move together with soil moisture and can be absorbed only in a warm season by plants or soil microflora in the biological way. [6]
