Rubidium — soft metal with a small density and low melting temperature. Pure rubidium has silver-white color. Rubidium in the chemical relation is similar to potassium and is active of all stable elements which are found in the nature in the form of these or those connections. Very actively rubidium also interacts with water. Decomposition reaction of water proceeds with a high speed and is followed by ignition. High activity of rubidium with oxygen and nitrogen is used at production of radio tubes for creation in them high vacuum.
Rubidium interacts with glass which when heating to 300 °C quickly collapses with release of elementary silicon. Vigorously this metal interacts with halogens, sulfur and phosphorus, with iodine reaction proceeds when heating, with other nonmetals reaction proceeds with ignition, and with bromine — with explosion.
Rubidium is photosensitive and is easily ionized by visible, infrared and ultra-violet areas of a light range. Loss of electrons under the influence of light is inherent in rubidium alloys with antimony, bismuth and other elements that allows to use it in photo cells.

In x-ray technology of compound of rubidium apply to increase in adsorption of a X-ray screens from ZnS. The easy ioniziruyemost of rubidium creates a possibility of use it in the devices and installations connected with direct transformation of heat into electrical energy, ionic engines, thermoelectric generators.
Metal rubidium finds application as the catalyst for reaction of a hydrogenation of benzene, and also other aromatic hydrocarbons and in reactions of polymerization at synthetic rubber production. Compounds of rubidium are also used in medicine.
