Description
Basically similar to European pear, except in shape, which is often more apple-like; some Asian pears are pyriform, however. Skin is yellow or brown, often heavily russetted like the European cultivar 'Bosc'. Unlike European pears that have melting flesh, Asian pears are very crisp and granular in texture, juicy, and so low in acid as to be somewhat bland or watery-sweet.
European pears are picked prior to physiological maturity, when still hard and green ("green mature"). If ripened fully on trees, the interior tissues turn brown and break down; if picked too early, they will not develop full flavor and shrivel in storage sooner. In contrast, Asian pears will ripen normally on the tree.
It is a fruit of temperate climate but there are certain hard-flesh and soft varieties which thrive well inmild, subtropical conditions.
It loves deep, fertile, well-drained, heavy loam. It is tolerant to soil moisture nd alkalinity, can also thrive in water-logged, shallow soil.
