Separators of fine fraction are designed for preliminary selection of ballast fraction of MSW (soil, street estimates, food waste) in order to improve the quality of sorting. As a rule, automatic separators are used - drum screens or rotary separators. After the separator, the MSW stream purified from fines is directed on a belt conveyor along the sorters, which take the recyclable materials. Separation of garbage on a drum screen occurs by mechanical separation of the fine from the coarse fraction during the rotation of the drum, which has a shell with predetermined cells.

The material is separated by rotating a drum with holes. The drum is mounted on polyurethane - coated wheels. The drum is driven by two wheels, each of which is connected to a geared motor. When the drum rotates, the material is shaken up and the fine fraction is separated from the coarse one. Thanks to the auger installed inside the drum, the material moves progressively when the drum rotates. On the inner surface of the drum there are removable knives designed for tearing bags and garbage bags.
A casing is included in the design of the drum screen, which reduces the dustiness of the space around the screen, and also protects against the rotating drum. For access to the inside of the screen, the casing is equipped with hinged doors.
The drum screen is mounted on a U - shaped support, which is equipped with service platforms. The support, together with the screen, is attached to the concrete floor with anchor bolts.
For electronic regulation of the number of revolutions, a frequency converter is provided, due to which the screen can operate in various speed modes and flexibly respond to how easily the material is separated and moves along the drum. In accordance with this, the optimal operating mode is selected for wastes of different composition and structure.
Depending on the length of the working surface of the drum, the screen can be two - fraction, three - fraction or four - fraction.
