Menthol is used in the pharmaceuticals of nonprescription group intended for treatment of cold, rheumatism, for removal of muscular pains from fatigue and so forth. In a number of means and in cosmetics apply natural or synthetic menthol to care of oral cavity, for example, in cough remedies and in tooth paste. The cooling effect of menthol on skin receptors allows to reduce irritation and itch, for example, at allergy. Menthol is added to cigarettes for decrease in the irritation caused by smoke in lungs.
In the food industry menthol and mint oil are used as fragrances of caramel, alcoholic drinks, confectionery (gingerbreads). In a number of works on homeopathy it was specified that use of menthol is not compatible to homeopathic treatment. There are no proofs of this statement.
It is used for synthesis of mentilovy ethers, e. g. menthyl acetate is used in perfumery for creation of flower note (especially in compositions for imitation of rose).
