Maleic anhydride (Maleic anhydride, CAS 108-31-6) - the solid matter with pungent smell consisting of colourless rhombic crystals. Restrictedly we will dissolve in acetone, benzene, xylol, toluene, chloroform, ethyl acetate. Other names: anhydride of maleic acid, 2,5-furandion. Chemical formula: C4H2O3.
The Maleic Anhydride (MA) is multifunction basic chemical which is applied practically in all industries of industrial chemistry. In particular, about 57% of volume of world production of MA are applied to receiving unsaturated polyester resinss. It is used also for synthesis of fumaric and apple acids, succinic acid, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, sugar substitute - aspartame, regulators of growth of plants, defoliants, fungicides, insecticides as the modifier of the alkyd resins. MA is also applied in production of vinyl copolymers which find application in such areas as production of engineering thermoplastics, emulsifiers, protective colloids, dispergators, stabilizers, glues, washing and cosmetics, sizing agents. Maleic anhydride is used as input product in production of hardeners of epoxies, inhibitors of scum, food additives (podkislitely, in particular, tartaric acid), plasticizers, adhesives, active ingredients of pharmaceuticals. Besides, MA apply as additive to lubricating oils. Addition of MA in paints and varnishes reduces time of their drying and improves quality of coverings.
