The isooctane is reference

zooktan reference (2,2,4-trimetilpentan) — saturated hydrocarbon of aliphatic series, a transparent colorless liquid with a gasoline smell; it is insoluble in water, we will dissolve in normal organic solvents; forms azeotropic mixtures, for example with benzene, methyl and ethyl alcohols. Anti-detonation properties of an isooctane are taken for 100 units of a scale of so-called octane numbers.

Receiving
The isooctane reference together with other isomers of an octane contains in small amounts in straight run gasolines. The industry receives an isooctane hydrogenation of diisobutylene over the catalyst, for example copper-chrome, or isobutane alkylation by isobutylene in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid, AlCl3, BF3 or other catalysts.
Application
The isooctane reference (2,2,4-trimetilpentan), is used
• as a reactant, reference fuel and a component in control fuels,
• as a component in intermediate reference mixes at determination of octane numbers of motor and aviation gasolines and their components
• in scientific researches and analytical practice,
• when carrying out analyses of oil on availability of organochlorine compounds, etc.
