High - impact polystyrene is a synthetic amorphous opaque thermoplastic material, which is a graft copolymer of styrene with rubber (most often with polybutadiene).

High impact polystyrene differs from general purpose polystyrene in increased impact strength and lower rigidity. Although the impact resistance is inferior to ABS - plastic.
Has reduced electrical insulating properties and lower tensile strength compared to general purpose polystyrene. Possesses sufficient frost resistance. Parts obtained from HIPS operate in the temperature range from - 30 ºС to + 70 ºС.
Resistant to water, dilute acids, alkalis, alcohols. Not resistant to organic solvents, industrial oils. Radiation resistant. Has low moisture absorption.
Under intense exposure to UV radiation, ultraviolet aging occurs, accompanied by yellowing and loss of strength of the material (the material becomes brittle and cracks even under light loads).
