Green tea extract contains antioxidant compounds including flavonoids, vitamins and polyphenols, such as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which may have antitumor properties. Consumption of green tea extract may provide a chemo preventive protection against various types of cancer, including prostate, stomach and esophagus.
Green tea contains between 2% and 4% caffeine, which affects the thinking and alertness, increases urine output and may improve brain function messages that are important in Parkinson's disease. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system, heart and muscles, increasing the release of certain chemicals in the brain called "neurotransmitters".
