Formic acid is applied as pickle when dyeing and finishing textiles, in wool dyeing, to processing of skin and as bleach at skin tanning. Formic acid slows down processes of rotting and disintegration therefore the prepared forages, the hay and silos processed by formic acid remain longer. It is used as the preserving and antibacterial agent, and also for disinfection of barrels for beer and wine; for fight against parasites in beekeeping; for receiving pharmaceuticals, pesticides, solvents, salts, ethers, in production of some dyes.

Formic acid irritates upper airways and mucous membranes of eyes; at hit on skin causes chemical burns. During the work with formic acid it is necessary to apply SIZ.
