NH4NCS ammonium rhodanide - colourless hydroscopic crystal substance. Let's well dissolve in water (54.9% at 0 °C and 61.9% at 20 °C). Dissolution is followed by allocation of large amount of warmth. Besides, ammonium rhodanide is dissolved in liquid ammonia, ethanol, methanol and acetone. It is capable to form hydrates and ammonia solutions. It is established that the molecule of ammonium rhodanide has isothiocyanate structure - NH4S=C=N. When heating above 140 °C ammonium thiocyanate is gradually isomerized in H2NC (S) NH2 thiourea. Toxicity of ammonium thiocyanate is rather small. At hit the xanthopsia phenomenon - vision of objects in yellow color inside can cause.

Ammonium thiocyanate is made:
on coke - chemical productions by catching of the cyanic connections which are contained in coke oven gases solutions of ammonium polysulphides;
interaction of ammonia with carbon sulfur:
2NH3 + CS2 - > NH4NCS + H2S
Application.
as mother compound at industrial receiving thiourea;
as reagent for dressing and printing of fabrics;
for etching of iron and steel;
in the photo as component of developers;
as component of electrolytes in galvanoplasty;
in analytical chemistry at rhodanometric and merkurimetrichesky definition of halogens and cyanides, photocolorimetric definition of ions of iron, cobalt, molybdenum, etc. ;
as intermediate compound for receiving other inorganic thiocyanates;
as intermediat by production of fungicides, pesticides and pharmaceuticals;
as component of freezing solutions
