Boron carbide is black brilliant crystals (density of 2,52 g/cm ³).
Boron carbide possesses exclusively high chemical resistance in different aggressive environments (does not interact with acids, but at the same time decays alkalis), is high-abrasive refractory material (temperature of melting of 2300 °C). This chemical is steady up to the temperature of 1000 °C, and on hardness boron carbide advances Al2O3 electrocorundum, SiC silicon carbide and if more precisely, then on hardness acts as the third after diamond and CBN cuboboron nitride.
Boron carbide is used as component of mixes for diffusion borating staly and refractory metals, and is also applied to receiving abrasive powders and pastes and as abrasive and abradant. It is used as additive for increase in the cutting properties and make sanding nozzles and nozzles for spraying of pulps and fertilizers of it.
In nuclear power boron carbide is widely applied as neutron-absorbing material as material of the cores regulating course of nuclear reactions as it contains in the structure atoms of isotope of boron 10B with very big section of capture of neutrons.
