Amino acids with branched side chains (Eng. Branched-chain amino acids, BCAA) - leucine, isoleucine and valine - are unique among amino acids.
Besides the obvious role in the construction of the molecules of proteins, amino acids with branched side chains have a variety of other functions. It is believed that during muscular work, they can be used to synthesize intermediates of tricarboxylic acid cycle and gluconeogenesis, i.e. act as energy sources. Additionally, these amino acids have regulatory functions: acting as signaling molecules, they regulate the processes of synthesis and degradation of proteins, cell metabolism and growth, as well as insulin secretion.
BCAAs serves as an important substrate of energy during exercise, and during periods of stress, and as precursor for the synthesis of other amino acids and proteins.
BCAA have a significant effect on the metabolism of glutamine.
Glutamine is recognized as an important nutrient many rapidly dividing cells in the body, especially in the gut and the immune system. Consequently, conventional diets are deficient in glutamine (due to its instability in solution) associated with atrophy and intestinal immune deficiency. Enrichment of parenteral nutrition with glutamine serves to reverse recovery partially atrophied intestines.
