General characteristics

- Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) - Grain derived from annual plant and is the fourth most important cereal crop in the world after rice, wheat and maize.

- Barley is very adaptable and is widely cultivated. It is grown as a summer crop in temperate areas and as the winter in tropical areas. Barley has a short growing season and relatively drought-resistant. However, take care and look after the grain is necessary at all stages of its growth and harvest.

- Barley is used as livestock feed, human food, and barley malt. Historically, livestock consumed most of the barley produced in the world, but now the situation has changed. Currently, grocery and industrial consumption of barley is more prominent.

- Barley along with corn, sorghum, oats, millet, are grouped together as a coarse grain.
