Description
Rams (Latin Ovis) — sort artiodactyl of family of cavicorn (Bovidae), including sheep. Rams reach length from 1,4 to 1,8 m, tail from 7 to 15 cm long. Height in shoulders from 65 to 125 cm, weight — from 20 to 200 kg, and males always considerably massivny females. Coloring of wool varies from whitish to dark brown and even black, quite often there is wool change. Males around neck often carry peculiar mane, but unlike goats have no small beard. Both floors have horns, however females have them smaller. Horns of males begin to twist on spiral with age and can reach length of 1 m.
In diploid cages different groups of rams have different chromosome number. This number (2n) makes from 52 (at snow ram) to 58 (at urial).
The quantity of chromosomes can sometimes differ at representatives of one look and even at one individual. The sheep usually has set of 54 chromosomes, however quite often there are cages with chromosome number from 50 to 53. Besides, there are breeds of domestic sheep in which 52-chromosomal individuals prevail.
The representatives of sort differing on chromosome number can be crossed and give viable and prolific posterity [4]. In mountains Elburs where areas of mouflon are crossed (2n = 54) and uriat (2n = 58), there is group of individuals of hybrid origin. The quantity of chromosomes at them makes from 54 to 58.
Young rams are called eanlings. Duration of pregnancy makes about five months. On average, rams reach age from 10 to 12 years.
Rams lead day life, however in especially hot days leave on rest to shady places and postpone questing to evening or night time. Females and young growth form small herds which sometimes integrate in larger. Males the majority of time live separately from females, leading or single life, or being part of exclusively men's group. In such group there is strict hierarchy established depending on the size of horns or in direct duels. Rams — herbivorous animals also eat mainly herbs.
