Adipic acid (hexanedioic acid) of HOOC(CH2)4COOH — dibasic saturated carboxylic acid. Possesses all chemical properties characteristic of carboxylic acids. Forms salts, the majority of which is soluble in water. It is easily etherified in mono - and diesters. With glycols forms polyethers. Adipates — adipates. At interaction with NH3 and amines gives the ammonium salts at dehydration turning into adipamida. With diamines forms polyamides, with NH3 in the presence of the catalyst at 300 — 400 °C — adipodinitrit.
Adipic acid — raw materials in production of poly(hexamethylene adipamide) (~ 90% of all made acid), its ethers, polyurethane; food additive of E355 for giving of acid taste (in particular, in production of soft drinks). The main component of different means for scaling. It is used also for removal of residual material after filling of seams between ceramic tiles.
