Description
Sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus)
The only representative of family sturgeon which constantly lives in fresh water. All life of a sterlet which lasts 20 - 30 years passes in the rivers. It can sometimes leave to the desalinated estuaries and gulfs of the seas adjacent to the mouth of the rivers. The sterlet reaches the weight of 3-4 kg and more, but fishes at the age of 3-12 years with a length of body up to 65 cm and weighing up to 2 kg generally prevail.
This fish meets in Dnieper, Dniester, lower reach of the Southern Bug, Danube, the Yew, the Seversky Donets and some inflows of these rivers. It constantly sticks to a bottom, eating Crustacea and, partially, small invertebrate animals of a bottom of reservoirs, such as small mollusks, worms, Crustacea and larvae of insects, occasionally zooplankton, insects and small fish. Males reach puberty on 3-5 year of life, a female - at 4-8-year age. One of biological features of a sterlet, thanks to feature of a set of chromosomes, is its easy skreshchivayemost with other types sturgeon. Exactly thanks to this property it was succeeded to receive such highly productive hybrids as a bester, a shister, an oster and so forth. The sterlet is included in the Red List of Ukraine
